What about the space under the stairs?
If you’re familiar with the Harry Potter series, you will know that the space under the stairs was used as a cupboard where young Harry used to sleep. While you certainly don’t have to sleep under the stairs, there are several other ways in which you can use this convenient, but commonly neglected area of your house.
Don’t hesitate to brighten up this space by painting it in vivid shades of yellow, green, red, orange and the likes. You can also add some decorative ornaments for a more homely feel. Also, remember that you’re going to need at least one light fixture such as overhead lamps, wall sconces or even a fan light.
While this is the most popular way to use the space under the stairs, you certainly do not have to haphazardly throw everything in there. To have a need, well-organized storage area, you can put up some shelves and label each one according to the items that you will place on them.
You can store just about anything under the stairs, from books to your kid’s toys, Christmas decorations, and various accents and ornaments. To add a touch of freshness, you may even place some artificial flowers or plants.
If your kitchen is on the smaller side, then you can always use the space under the stairs as a larder or cupboard. Indeed, you have plenty of storage space for your tinned and canned food. Some people even like to use this area to store their old and expensive bottles of wine.
Just make sure to clean and rearrange this space at least once a week.
If you’ve got enough room, why don’t you build a mini home office under the stairs? A chair, a desk, your laptop and you’re all set.
An alternative would be to build a reading nook in that space: you can very easily set up a built-in bookcase to store your books, and then add some comfortable cushions or even a small couch right next to it. This will make an extremely cozy and comforting retreat from the outside world.
The space under the stairs can also make a wonderful playground for small children.
Surround the area with thick cushions, toys and a rug and watch them play for hours. The one major advantage is that all their mess will be confined to this one place, which means less cleaning up for you.
